How to Choose the Perfect Long-Lasting Wedding Blooms: 5 Expert Tips

Your wedding flowers are a huge part of your special day, adding beauty, elegance, and personal meaning to your celebration. But what happens after the big day? Instead of letting your bouquet wilt away, you can turn it into a cherished keepsake that lasts forever.

When it comes to flower preservation, selecting the right blooms is crucial! Here are five expert tips to guide you in choosing the best wedding flowers with preservation in mind.

  1. Colour is Key

The primary suggestion is to think about color! Although classic white flowers with rich greenery are undoubtedly attractive, they are not the simplest to preserve. Preservation is still possible, but adding a hint of color can improve the look of dried flowers in a frame. If you favor tradition, consider adding soft accents of peach or pink hues, as these colors typically retain their brightness better than white flowers, which often turn to a cream or ivory shade.

Just as interior designers expertly utilise a well-placed burst of color in a neutral space, vibrant wedding bouquets against a white or ivory bridal gown can significantly elevate the aesthetic of your special day. Beyond bouquets, the versatility of colored wedding flowers is unmatched—they can beautifully adorn your wedding cake, accent doorways, and embellish chair backs, infusing delightful touches of color and charm throughout your celebration.

  1. Choose Durable Varieties

The season and time of year will affect the types of flowers available for your bouquet. The second tip for preservation highlights choosing sturdy flowers with a solid structure, such as roses, dahlias, orchids, and hydrangeas, as they dry well and maintain their shape. On the other hand, less dense flowers like freesias and cosmos tend to become very fragile, and those with numerous petals, like chrysanthemums, often deteriorate and don't dry as effectively unless they are very fresh or in the bud stage to preserve their form. White Lisianthus usually turns an unattractive yellow-brown when dried, which is why we exclude them from our preservation process. Although they are beautiful when fresh, we opt to use only the buds of White Lisianthus for texture, avoiding the undesirable color change during drying.

  1. Add foliage if it complements your theme

Fresh foliage not only enhances the beauty of blooms by framing them but also plays a crucial role in protecting the flowers. In a preserved frame, foliage provides the same benefits. Our advanced drying process with silica sand can make the blooms delicate and almost papery, making the use of foliage essential for protection. Additionally, it adds texture, contrast, and shape to most designs. However, not all foliage is equal—some may turn brown over time. We particularly favor eucalyptus, white/green limonium, and can also work with magnolia, ruscus, hydrangea, and rose leaves. Conversely, lamb's ear isn't ideal for preservation as it tends to retain sand particles, affecting the final result.

  1. Consider the smaller details

We recommend asking your florist to include a variety of flowers for added texture. Your framed bouquet will become an eye-catching artwork on your walls, with every small detail standing out as you appreciate it. Consider incorporating flowers such as Baby’s Breath, Limonium, Queen Anne's Lace, buds, miniature daisies, wheat, grasses, sweet pea vines, and similar options to add intricate detail to your frame. Additionally, these flowers will also enhance the beauty of your fresh bouquet.

  1. Consult with your Florist

Try to inform your florist ahead of time about your plans for the flowers following the wedding. This communication might encourage them to incorporate different elements into your bouquet, as listed above. While they should already select the best and freshest blooms, knowing you want a longer-lasting display could lead them to make different choices. Additionally, they might offer guidance on keeping your flowers fresh and vibrant for a longer period. Collaborating with a skilled florist can be highly advantageous. Not only do they have a keen eye for design, but they also possess knowledge about flower sourcing and arrangements. An experienced florist can assist you in choosing colors and varieties that complement each other, ensuring a cohesive look. They might even recommend a combination of flowers that will photograph beautifully together, enhancing the overall effect of your floral displays.
